Grants for Adapting Your Property Due to Disability

Disabled Facilities Grants are available from local councils to help pay for necessary adaptations to your home. Formed by the government, this grant enables disabled people to adapt their home so that they can continue to live there.

You can apply for a Disabled Facilities grant if yourself, or someone else living in your home, is disabled, one of you either owns or is a tenant of, the property and you can certify that you, or the person who you are applying for, will occupy the property for five years.

If you are a landlord and have a disabled tenant, you can also apply for the grant to adapt the property for their use.

Putting the Money to Work

These grants are provided by your local council and can be used to adapt your property in order to give the disabled resident freedom of movement in and around the home. This could include work such as the widening of doors, installing ramps, installing a stair lift or providing a downstairs bathroom. There is also the option to use the grant to improve facilities in the home, such as the heating system or lighting controls.

Put the Wheels in Motion

The first step in the process is to request that an occupational therapist come out and assess your home. This will provide you with a better idea of what adaptations you will require. Then you can start the application process. Firstly, you need to contact your local council – specifically the housing or environmental health department.

It is important to bear in mind that your application won’t be accepted if you have already started carrying out the work on your property, but the council are under obligation to notify you of the outcome of your application within six months.

The Price is Right

Like many other grants offered by local councils, the Disabled Facilities Grant is means-tested – based on an assessment of your financial situation. Basically, the council will look at your weekly income and essential outgoings, such as rent or mortgage payments and personal expenditure, to determine what level of the grant you will need. They also take into account your savings, which if above a certain level can have an impact on the amount you will receive.

However, if you are applying because you have a disabled child under the age of 19, then there is no need for means-testing and you will receive the full amount. If you are married, or have a partner, the council will assess your combined income, but the first £6,000 of any savings you might have is ignored.

The maximum grant amount available is £25,000 for applications in England and Northern Ireland and £30,000 in Wales.

Planning

With any building work, especially if external changes are being made, planning permission or buildings regulation approval may be required. This is not included in the application for the grant and you will have to apply separately to gain any approval you might need before you start the work.

Once you have received the grant, the council can also request that you employ a qualified individual, such as an architect or a surveyor, to make sure that the work is carried out appropriately, but you can use a portion of the grant to pay for this.

How to Appeal

If you have been refused a Disability Facilities Grant by your local council don’t panic just yet, you can appeal. Each local council has an appeals and complaints procedure. If this isn’t effective, you do have the option of registering a complaint with the Local Government Ombudsman.

@Stacey Sorry to hear what you're going through, that sounds really tough. The main thing to look into is a Disabled Facilities Grant from your local council, which can pay up to £30,000 towards adaptations like putting in a downstairs bathroom or wet room. You'll need an Occupational Therapist assessment first, so ask your GP or ring the council's adult social care team to get that started. It's means tested, but well worth applying given your situation.

Hiya I wanted to know how this works with getting a downstairs bathroom, I ended up with a brain tumour( cancer) I find it hard to walk up stairs to use the bathroom, my joints hurt so much, I get in so much pain to walk and even pick things up.

Hi if l meet a man after his wife passed away .l have my council disability hous.and me being disabled and want to move in to my boyfriends up and down stairs house him and his wife lived in for years .and could l move in to his house and would council housing adapted it for me but the house my boyfriend lived in for years .and if l moved in and gave up my council disability house to move in with him would council adapt all that l need

My husband is disabled, not alot of mobility awaiting 2 x spinal surgeries and a liver transplant. Currently has leg in plaster due to diabetic foot ulcers currently 3 months and alot longer process. Council have said we need an extension for a bathroom and bedroom downstairs but will have to wait 4 years for this to be even started? So how does my husband wash out of a bucket for 4 years? That's if he even has 4 years left with us.

I am on PIP living with Primary Progressive MS and an injury i was medically discharged from the army with - both together make my daily life a real struggle, we own our own home (Mortgaged) and i sleep on an air bed in the living room most nights as i cant manage the stairs,
a stair lift is not an option for me as their is no room - small staircase and 2 young children. and it takes too long to get upstairs - My MS affects my bladder and bowel control.
i am still working - i use a wheel chair for work as i cannot walk more than a meter without being in excruciating pain and/or falling over,
is their any help available so i can afford to build a downstairs extension for a bedroom/bathroom so we don't have to move home as we cant afford any where else,

I live in housing association provided by council. I have drive way. I am disable since 2015. I have a big problem with my drive way. There are lots of trees and when I park my car where day it is fill with bird poo. Its been 2 years and I can't take it anymore. As it is expensive to have car washed everyday. I wanted if I could get a grant so I can put roof on my drive way but I don't know where I can get grant from.

Aftr becoming disabled in 2002, l asked for no help, but a car accident in 2013 exacerbated my condition. Nerve damage affected my bowels & bladder. Leaving me in need of downstairs toilet and kitchen adaptation. My LL, Gloucester City Homes did everything NOT to help me, even forcing the use of a commode in my kitchen, knowing l could not empty it so it was bacterial germ infecting disaster.
After repeated complaints, even engaging Architects as they asked, they still refused. Finally after a further O. T assessment they begrudgingly agreed. But are blocking the work because they won’t accept my builder dispute the fact he meets their criteria & has worked for them before, rated excellent. My question is, under the rules , am l entitled to instruct my own builder. My situation gets worse daily, trips & falls downstairs cause more injury, as well as the indignity and embarrassment of loosing control of my bowels/bladder, & not being able to clean up because of my Spinal issues. Please help if you can. Thank you

I have spondyloarthropathy in my spine,hips and shoulder. It is really difficult to use my kitchen properly the cupboards l can't reach into as it causes me too much pain and l also loose my balance. Can l get a grant to have the kitchen completely re done so l can access cupboards etc more easily.

I have osteoporosis really bad and I’m unable to do simple tasks like open & close my house windows because they’re very old.
I’m also unable to do steps without help.
Which means I’m unable to do laundry & even bath without help.
Being on a fixed income I have to use my money for utilities, food, and prescription medicine.
That doesn’t leave money to do anything I desperately need. Could you possibly help me with that?

Hi I dislocated my shoulder 2 years ago. I have nerve damage mainly because it took them 4 goes before they managed to put the shoulder back in. And it was the doctor in charge who came and was surprised it had not been done, who came and fixed it. I find it difficult using the shower in the bath and I’m terrified I’m going to have another fall. I wonder if I can get a grant for a small walk in shower. My daughter is my carer, as I have stage 3 heart failure and arthritis also and she enjoys having a bath so I would like to keep it.

Just wondering, if I would be entitled to a grant for another toilet to be put in ,theres me my partner and my son living here ,we share 1 toilet that's in my bathroom, it's getting very difficult to use the toilet when needed by all 3 of us ,as I have IBS and my partner suffers with inflammation of the bowels which makes him bleed quite alot ,so when he needs the toilet he really does ,where do I go from here ,who do I get in touch with thankyou

Reading the comments it shows how f'kd the system is, people with genuine physical illnesses who struggle to walk etc are on basic rate for PIP just want an extra toilet room or home adaptions to help them, yet someone (Richard) who has as far as I can see a mental illness gets higher rate for PIP wants a conservatory adding.... for no reason at all other than it will add value to his property whilst the government pay for it.

Whilst I appreciate mental illness is an actual illness (but most cant be proven), it seems like many people just abuse the system for financial gain which in turn over stretches the system where they then need to be a lot more harsh on PIP assessments to people who genuinely need the support and help.

My husband had surgery, he was diagnosed with a brain Tumour which has left him with mobility problems and fatigue. I also have had problems in the past couple of years I had very bad sciatica Which left me with a my wright foot trip hazards, I am also waiting on knee replacement on both knees. I suffer from anxiety and depression. We are looking to have stairs from our bedroom out to the garden.

A much bigger job is being quoted for than I actually need.
Can I get my own quoted from other companies if this will be a lot cheaper.
Will the council agree to this if the quote is for a much smaller job which was my original request.

Hello i get highest care and mobikity on pip and sever premium on esa. I need to see if i can get a grant or help. I am so shocked by the number of people in similar situations to myself. Chells44, she could have written my narrative, we are so akin.
But what I cannot view is the advice given.

I would like to know what you as Experts are advising we do. I have been applying for a Disabled Facility Grant from my Landlord who is the local authority for more than 6yrs now.... what they do is partially approve, but then nothing happens, when I ask about the fundamental part of my applicaton, the absolute necessity for a Downstairs bathroom, and the open plan layout of my downstairs so I can more easily negotiate the space...I hear nothing.

I do not have a hot meal unless someone else makes it for me, as I predominately live alone. There are times when I do not get out the house for weeks. I have bladder & bowel accidents, which at my age is not only psychologically debilitating but practically I am unable to clean up the accidents when they occur.

I am asking for a brand new property I am asking for the reasonable adjustments reflective of my condition that I am entitled to within the criteria.

I would be enormously grateful if you could advice me on the way forward.

Hi I have a son with Down syndrome n is now 2 but isn't walking I carry him up n down stairs n he's very heavy to carry. He's on oxygen and feeding tube. I have a daughter who is 11 n has knee problem n has been suffering for last 2 years now needs op which will leave her with mobility problems in getting around the house as she will need to wear a braise on her leg n kept straight. I live in a council incommunities home do I qualify for extra help e.g. Extentions got extra room as I'm in a 3 bedroom n have 5 children. A wet room downstairs? Hi, could you let me know, if you are in receipt of a disabled facilities grant in Wales, if the amount of time you must live in your property is also 5 years in Wales, as in England? Also, has the length of time you must reside in the property always been 5 years or has it changed in, say, the last 6 or 7 years. Lastly, if it has changed, been reduced for example, whether you can sell or rent the property without repercussion? Thank you so much, your help is hugely appreciated.

Hi I’m serverely disabled and have very bad falls and unable to do stairs or use the bath which has been that way 4 years December. Did try stairs again but had a serious fall and broke my sacrum. So advised to not try again. I have been living in my dining room which has an arch which goes straight into my little kitchen that holds my bed and commode.. I also have bowel and blAdder problems which is embarrassing for me. I have no washing facilities, bedroom or toilet. This situation has worsened my illnesses plus my mental health .. also while been living like this I’ve found out last month I have tumours in my head, behind and under eyes which have spread deep into my face and on jaw bone. Had 3 joint visits with an OT and housing officer in 2 and half when I worsened and asked if could help me live downstairs but in the spot on each visit was told no by the hosuing adaptations officer even though the OT agreed was best option for me. On 3 rd visit said only option would be to move which is not an option for me . I got to a point where I didn’t know where to turn and wanted it all to end. My sister knew I couldn’t communicate and put things in writing and knew how much this was effecting me and not being able to wash at all has been so degrading for me. My sister put a complaint in to the head of OT where she accepted I needed the help and only option was to adapt my property which council didn’t like so he asked for an A1 referral which to my shock thought was don’t on previous visits which I trusted then to do which wasn’t done. A1 referral went in june 2018 and for housing said they are excempt from applying for the disabled facilities grant and have to see if can afford to fund it themselves. They also wrote in letter that in the mean time they will offer me any properties tht come up that would be suitable which scared me. Due to huge delays and no communication from OTs or council my sister took the complaint to the odbusman for him to look into .. bAsically he couldn’t deal with the hosuing management issue as that would have to go through to the hosuing odbusman so will look into that soon but he looked into OT side of things and agreed they should have been A1 referrals done on every visit even if was no still as I would of had the right to appeal each time which I was un aware of too plus he found they was huge delays in Ot coming out to do assessments. So that was that but as have huge delays still my oater is going to sask for help to get it looked in to , to see if has been done correctly. I didn’t know but the ot received complaint letter but called me to bully me and told me to ask the odbusman for details in the disabled facilities grant and mentioned the complaint. She was very rude and didn’t need to mantion the complaint ans even call me. I feel no one will give me a straight answer about anything . She also said I can’t apply for the disabled facilities grant as I don’t own my property but I was under the understanding

Hi, My wife has severe spinal problems and has chronic arthritis in most parts of her body she is a wheelchair user unable to walk short distances. our council a few years ago put double yellow lines in front of our house with yellow lines coming of the pavement to prevent drivers parking including disabled! We have tried to live with this but it’s getting out of hand. if I am not around then she becomes house bound in case she can’t get Parked close to our house, we have had parking tickets when my wife has no choice but to park out side our house. She us unable to walk if she where to park 100-150 yards down the road. We have huge parking problems in our street. So my question is could she apply to have a Disability grant to put a hard stand at the back of our house to park her car-to allow her to get around without fear of being fined for parking out side our house. Hi I'm currently in a two bed counsil bungalow whilst I have the basic adoptions ie grab rails wet room I cannot manage I'm in a wheelchair I cannot walk more than 3 /4 steps wirh a frame I cannot move around my home because I cannot turn my chair the hallways so narrow my we r rooms great but I cannot get my chair in and out I cannot get through doorways although once in a room in fine there's enough room to move my chair all ways but I'm a prisoner in my home I have no ramps I cannot answer the door I use my back door but that leads to another and cannot get my chair in and around the out house to get through the second door it's terrible I have no garden sending so cannot get a notability scooter as I'd need to keep it indoors no fending so not safe to leave out side I need my kitchen cupboards lowering and sink as I cannot reach them from my chair this is so so hard I don't no where to go who to ask or anything any advice would be great it's. Local authority property and I'm on disability benefits so there must be help available I just don't no how or whom or if i can get assistance

Hii my dad has rhemotoid arthritis and prostrate cancer so is crippled with pain and disability he is unable to shower n bath and just has very basic flannel washes so hygiene is very poor so Grant's supports bath harness so he's is able to have baths and showers ..thanks

Hi, my grandmother is 93 years old living in a sheltered accommodation bungalow. She has just got out of hospital having spent a week in there following a fall in her bathroom where she hit her head of the bath and also hurt her knee. She cannot get in and out of the bath and has to wash sitting down in front of the basin. She has a seat in the bath which is of no use since she can’t step in and out of it. My question is would she be entitled to a disabled wet room of some sort? Thank you for your help.

Sirs,
I have a mobility disability (walk with a stick and Walker, occasional have to use a wheelchair) and following a car accident I have nerve damage affecting my bowel and bladder. I rent my home from the local housing authority. I applied for a disabled facility grant to adapt my bathroom to a wet room, and to adapt my kitchen, as well as creating a downstairs toilet. Most was essentially approved, although for some reason initially they had issues with the downstairs toilet; which is a necessity, as I often do not make it upstairs to the bathroom so I have accidents, or worse, if I'm not expecting any one I'm stuck upstairs like a prisoner so I'm close to the bathroom. At first they said I had to move, but in over 4yrs they did not find a suitable property, instead I'm left having embarrassing accidents, falling down the stairs, once a fall left me unconscious at the bottom of the stairs for 3days in winter (unable to get up). Despite repeatedly chasing them, I'm being told, work will start, yes we'll give you a start date. Instead what's happened in close to 5yrs is they've paired back what was originally agreed, and even then no work has begun.
What I'm wondering is, am I entitled to engage the trades myself to do the work and invoice the local authority. I don't know what my rights are as a tenant. I know if I owned the property it would be different. But this has now been going on far too long, And frankly, drama aside, I think the Housing Authority are either hoping one of the accidents will finally kill me or I'll pay for the work myself (which I would do if I had the funds).
As Grant Experts can you please advise me on my options, the situation is now extremely urgent and life threatening!

I have just purchased a bungalow but the kitchen needs to be lowered as I am a wheelchair user. I have found some great builders who are going to build a ramp for me so I can enter the property (I have managed to scrape together enough for this) but I won’t have the whole sum of money for the work on the kitchen. I am coming up toy sebenoeyj birthday and simply love my h
garden. My one problem is that due to BRI g able yo keep my balance and having up to 10 times over yje last few momys I an not able to msnsge y rear garden any more due to it having a slope of 45 degrees i would like to have it changed into three terraces. My condition has apparently due to having had polio as a infant in my left leg and a now depend on a walking stick to move about. Hi, a year ago we moved to a one bedroom housing executive bungalow due to an immediate need to move to a place without stairs. My wife was having serious problems due to disabilities. Due to this bungalow having one bedroom my wife, my son and I share.
My son is 11Years old now and we thought that we might qualify for an extension(extra bedroom) but when we had an assessment by an occupational therapist they said it wasn't disability need but a social need.And the housing executive are not helping with an extra room either.
My wife is very happy in our new home and wants to stay as she feels safe and happy.
But we Need an extra room. What can we do.

Hi I have suffered from a slipped disc in my lower spine and I suffer from lymphoedema in my legs i also have polymyalgia and am diabetic I also have arthritis in my knees and I have trouble walking or standing for more than a few minutes I have trouble getting of the chair. I am in severe pain all the time. I can't get up and down stairs I have my bed in my kitchen and use a commode in my livingroom I can't get in and out of a bath so only have a wash down every week in the kitchen on my bed I have been trying to stay away from a wheelchair but my pain is getting so unbearable it looks like it is going to be the only way to get around because I have only Been out of the house four times in 5 years and that was a total disaster. I am starting to get depressed. I have no heating as the oil heating doesn't work my kitchen had a flood twice last year and the units around the sink have rooted with water damage and the worktops are coming away from the walls. I I would love to have a bathroom and shower down stairs so i could have a hot shower and a room were I could put my bed. There is other things I need done in the house like new back door , front door and panel , there is cracks in the ceiling and there is things outside that need done. I am in receipt of eesa and pip I was left the house by my father but I pay the mortgage and ground rent and have done since 2013. I have my cousin living here and he helps me by making me food and doing housework and anything else I neceilingthere anyway I would be entitled to help by getting a grant or can you steer me in the right direction. Thank you

Hello

My father is registered blind and lebers diagnosis (neurological) stiffness in his body so he cannot move around without excruciating pain.

He is 70yrs old. His kitchen is in urgent need of renovation . The roof is falling down and so are the units. He cannot access the units as they are either too high or too low. He cannot use an air in the kitchen as it’s too tight for him to go inside and use the kitchen independently.

We asked for assistance from local council as the OT had only suggested a lift in the property. As for his eye sight... there’s no help available.

Hi, have a daughter that was born with polymicrogyria, which affects both sides of her brain.
She is fully dependable on me when she is with me.
I have her every weekend from Friday to Monday morning.
I cannot bath her properly due to the bathroom in my flat not meeting her needs and poorly laid out.
I would really appreciate some assistance In adapting the bathroom for me to be able to bath her properly when she's with me.
Her hygiene and comfort is very important to me and atm I can only bath her properly when I have visitors to assist me.

Due to disability both my wife and I need a downstairs bathroom. We do have some funds of our own but do not know the limits of what amount you have to have before you can claim. Also if we have to pay ourselves some people have said you may be VAT exempt.

It’s hard for me to afford much to maintain my garden as it can take up to 10000 pounds to maintain it . My wife is registered disabled, I have health issues osteoarthritis, compressed discs in the spine and prostate problems and I am in constant pain I am not registered disabled. My doctor is supporting the requirement to have a bath fitted instead of the current walk in shower. It will be difficult for my wife to use a bath because of disability and we are now looking into a low level bath with a bath lift. An occupational therapist is going to assess my wife to see if this adaption is feasible. If my wife gets the go ahead from the OT would the work come under a grant?

I have a lodger (62) who has shared my house for 20years I am is carer. His depression and anxiety is now measurable worse. He is to be assessed for autism in particular Asperger's syndrome which I have suspected this since I first met him as I was a teacher have taught several pupils with Asperger's and recognised this immediately. He gets the full PIP and EESA and travel permit.

However he is now in a situation where any bangs, loud noises he treats as a potential threat and goes into deep depression. I have had an outside wall sound proofed and it was effective but I now need to put secondary glazing in to hopefully eliminate 80% of other noises from traffic.

Will he be entitled to a grant for the secondary glazing even if it is just VAT relief. The cost will be £4000 inc VAT

I`d like to know if I can get a grant for off road parking. I`m registered disabled & receive full PIP. I have a garage but it`s a double heavy up & over door & very difficult for me to get open & shut. It even means that I can`t go out when I need or would like as it`s so difficult. Would really like to have my front garden turned into a driveway so I can be able to go out whenever I like NOT IF I can open the garage door or not.
I also sleep downstairs now on the sofa & only have a very small front room & was also wondering if I would be able to get help with an extension so I could have a bedroom & not have to live in 1 room.

my son is a wheel chair user with cerebral palsy.He is now 26 years old and I have always cared for him but due to the fact that we only have an ordinary kitchen I cant teach him any life skills in the way of cooking etc,We also havn't got a downstairs loo and he has to get up and down the stairs on his bottom.He actually hasnt been in thr garden since he got too big to carry.Is there any way of getting a grant to build an extension so we can have a loo and a low level kitchen that he can use?

hi, i have continence problem due to my neurologic problems. i find it hard to go upstairs too with the same condition i got. i get worse (getting stiff, shaky, incontinent, feels depressed and frustrated) mostly during night time. can i avail of a disability facility grant ( having a bedroom and toilet downstairs). I am disabled and have recently been accepted for enhanced mobility for P.I.P. I'm unable to get my garden done anymore and it needs digging up and grasses over. I also need to get a shed and slabs for underneath to put my mobility chair into as I live in a small flat etc. I'm in a private rented flat and my landlord is impossible to get hold of. I've been trying a few months now to find out if he will help pay to have it done but I'm getting no response. Would I be entitled to a grant or any other help to get this garden and shed sorted out? I have a disabled Son, (Severe Autism). He has full PIP. We have a garden room in our house that the previous owners installed a 6 Seater Hot Tub/ Jacuzzi. We would like it removed & turned into a chill out/play room for our son. Could we get funding to facilitate this? It would require someone removing or dismantling the side of the garden room & disconnecting the electrical supply.

Hi, My Auntie is now at home following an operation with complications which resulted in her being a double amputee. She lives in a housing association ground floor flat which has not been adapted. She cannot move from room to room and does not have a wet room. She is imprisoned in her home. Her son is caring for her the best he can a single parent.
Please can you give any help or advice as this has all come as a devastating shock and we want to give her the best quality of life possible.

I am now under palatable care and I have about a year or two before my illness kills me. Do I still need to go through all the financial checks before I can be awarded a grant for a bigger bathroom, as the one we have is not big enough for a wheelchair, plus I won't be able to to use the bath any more

Hi I am a council tenant. I have a disabled grandchild who has GO he is 4yrs old and can not walk. I have him every weekend. He is getting very big and heavy to carry up my stairs. I do not have the money to put a stair lift in myself.

Hi, I am new to all this but I have a 16yr old daughter who has high functioning Autism diagnosis with mental health issues. We only have a 5foot x 3 foot tiny shower room and also a seperate toilet also in a tiny room, my daughter has massive OCD issues and cannot use the shower room and is now starting to become the same with the toilet room. She is now taking baths at my friends house due to the anxiety of these issues and I was wondering if I would be able to get some help to build a small extension to our council home to build a proper bathroom where she can move about in there and also be able to get a bath fitted as she's now refusing to use the shower as she's feeling closed in and can't breathe in there. I just wondered if I could get any help anywhere ?

Hi I am wondering if anyone could help me am desperate. We applied for a DFG and got the full amount 30,000. I took on the role of project manager with getting an architect,planning permission, building regs, and three tenders for the council. The council chose a builder but said builder could not afford the job outright and be paid at the end . So I asked social services for a contingency fund and the council they both agreed at 10,000 each ( this was done so the council would pay the builder in increments the cost was 12% of the grant ) so the work to be done was a front ramp, bedroom and wetroom downstairs breaking through from the living room. All good so far. Now half way through the build it was discovered that a masserator had to be put in with the pipe running through the kitchen to my downstairs toilet, also tht all the decking had to be ripped up to lay the pipe outside on a diagonal axis. now we are in the midst of the council saying that they will not agree to the decking being paid for to be relayed out of the contingency money that i would have to push my husband round the block to gain access to the garden. Nothing of this was said on the decking being ripped up and a mud bath taking its place also there were no guidelines on how the contingency money was to be used. so sorry for the long post Am i within my rights for the contingency money to be used for this many thanks

Hello, i had the Occupational therapist out to getting help, as i can't use the bath an such ( in view of getting a shower put in) how ever they have informed me this is not feasible.
I had another a assessment by an
Advanced MH Practitioner who advised me to apply to the council, but if they have already turned me down what do i do ?.
This is not helping my depression i can tell you.

Check with your local authority, there may be scope for increasing the length of the space and/or dropping the kerb. It's also worth looking at all the options as some vehicles can be accessed via either side with a sliding door etc.

Hello, we are housing association tenants and have a wheelchair bound child and have been issued an electric wheelchair in place of her specialist buggy, we have a disabled space outside our house, however we live on a busy street and parking is tight and often bumper to bumper, at the moment we lift our daughter in and out of the car and can’t use the wheelchair provided but we are considering getting a wheelchair accessible vehicle, but the problem we would then have is that there would be no regular access at the rear to allow the opening and closing of the ramp, and also there is no drop kerb nearby.

Would it possible to apply for a grant in these circumstances, or is it a nonstarter?

It might be worth contacting the British Legion to see if they can give advice/support. If you're eligibile for PIP you may be able to get a grant (used to be called the Disabled Facilities Grant) for alterations...check with your local council.

Hi I was recently medically discharged from the Army, and as part of my recovery pathway the Army came out to my house and carried out adaptions to my house, initially they were going to knock down my kitchen extension and rebuild it bigger to include a downstairs Toilet, however when the local Occupational Therapist came out, she decided that this would be a nicety and that if the local council were paying for it they wouldn't agree to it. So instead of being promised all this work to my house I ended up with the bare minimum.

I've got an un operation spinal injury and leg problems, basically I've had 4 spinal operations and have now been told that they cant operate anymore on my spine and that my injuries can only be treated with strong medication, due to the nature of my injuries I struggle with the stair and because the Army wont help me anymore, I've now had to sit with my wife and try to figure out how we could pay for a new extension to include a toilet and sink so when I do have severe bad days then I don't have to crawl up the stairs to get to the toilet.

As this is all new to me, I was told by a relative that I may be able to apply for grants to help me to create a new extension to suit my medical needs.

Could you explain if this is correct and if so how I go about applying for these grants.

My brother received a DFG to help adapt the home he shared with his wife after suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Unfortunately within 2 years of having the adaptations, we found cause for concern that his wife is neglecting him and not meeting his care needs, therefore my parents are wanting him to move back home with them. This will require adaptations to their home as he is severely disabled and will require wheelchair access amongst other things. Will he be able to apply for a grant to help with the cost of the adjustments to our parents house or has he exhausted all his funding on his marital home due to him not living there for 5 years?

Keep trying, the disabled facilities grant should be avalailble if you genuinely need it. It's also worth checking locally (your local authority and Citizens' Advice) to see if any other grants/funding are available.

Due to accident I had at work 2011 has left me disabled and unable to cope with everyday life task I ask to be assessed but unfortunately wasn't any funding available I've been told, to help me which is I don't find it fair. As I worked every day I could and paint every bit of tax but it seems like when you go down no one wants to know.

I've never asked for anything and have recently asked for an assessment as I cannot get up from the toilet safely. Was assessed in April and told they'd put it through as urgent. I had to chase the paperwork as they'd been sending it to the wrong address and didn't apologise either. 5 months on and told they won't pay as I can 'easily' borrow £50000 in loans! They said I have a weekly disposable income of nearly £300 too and have only taken into consideration £61 for my mortgage a week, it's 4 times that! Asked to appeal and told I can't.

Hi, I have 3 autistic children. I am thinking of applying for a DFG grant. Will I have to apply for all the children individually or can I apply as a whole. As they are all creating the need for space.

Hello, I am physically disabled person who lives in social housing in Ealing, London. I live with my family. I would like to have some adaptations on in my home. However, I do not know how to go about it.

I know that I have to contact my local council for an Occupational Therapy report. I would like to contact an independent Occupational Therapist, but I have not been able to find one in my area. Is there a database of independent Occupational Therapist that I can access?

I would really appreciate any advice and information you are able to give me.

Hi, I would like to know it it is worth my while to apply for a disability grant to convert my garage. I am a single mother of 2 children and live in a 3 bedroom house (I pay a mortgage). My daughter is 17 and has complex learning needs and ASD. She occupies the "box room". My 12 year old son is having the slightly bigger bedroom but swapping is out of the question because he needs piece and quiet to study (room for a desk) etc. The only option to extend my daughters living space is to convert the garage and this would give her room to freely move around. Financially it is impossible for me to afford a move to a bigger property. Is there any financial assistance available towards a garage conversion? Thank you

We are going to have adaptations done under a dfg for our son. However the work is extensive and the builder has said we will need to move out whilst the work is done. We own our home and have a mortgage. We don't have any family or friends who we could stay with and we can't afford rent on top of the mortgage. The council have said they cannot help towards alternative accomodation as we don't receive housing benefit. We will effectively be homeless or we can't have the work done. Surely they have to help?

I have three children, my eldest has ADHD and autism and struggles sharing his bedroom due to him being over stimulated with his brother in his room. We can't put his younger brother to bed until he is asleep as he has a tendency to hurt his little brother and out pillows over his face.

We have been given permission to extend our property from our housing association would we qualify for a grant to help the costs towards building an extension on the house so my autistic son can have his own bedroom with specific sensory requirements ?

It's unlikely that you will be able to build an extension on a council property. Speak with your housing department and ask them what suggestions they have.

Hi I'm in a 3 bed council house. There is 2 adults 6 children living here. Eldest child has adhd and autism we have made him a small separate bedroom me and my husband are sleeping on a sofa bed downstairs as the other 5 children have the 3 bedrooms . Is there any grants we could apply for for help building a exstion as local council they don't have a good se big enough for us in the local area x thank you x

My driveway is unsafe and I have tripped over on the uneven slabs. It's a council bungalow but they won't do it and I want to park my car on it which will help me with my mobility in the bad weather . They say it's not their problem as they don't do drives

Hi my mum has terminal cancer and lost the use of her legs she owns her own property but it's living in the living room is there and funding she could get to put a wet room down stairs has she has no money to do this

He could apply for a disabled facilities grants but would need medical support to do so. Try his local council first of all to see if they know of any grant funding.

You may be able to get this work done under the disabled facilities grant. You must be disabled and must intend to use the driveway for at least the duration of the grant period (which is currently 5 years).
Apply to your local council - they will investigate whether the work is necessary and appropriate to your needs and whether it can feasibly be done at your property (planning and highways regulations will need to be considered).

Hi. I would like to know if it would be worth me applying for a grant to get a dropped kerb and driveway put in garden.
It would make it easier for me as it would be closer to back door.
Im disabled with DDD. spinal stenosis,fibromyalgia (18 tender points) and CFS. Im also on benefits.

Hi I have a question me, my husband and 3 children live in a 3 bed council home and were wondering if a disability grant would be awarded for diverting the loft into 2 bedrooms as we have a son with adhd who has his own room but 1 of our daughter's is autistic and is physically abusive to her sister and therefore needs her own room and moving would be out of the question as she can not handle change. If it's a housing association flat and it's been adapted for the disabled, they may want to keep it that way for future tenants. So even if she manages to find the funds for a conversion she might need to be prepared to reinstate the wet room should she ever move on. The Turn 2 Us website is the best place to look for locally available grants.

The DFG may not necessarily cover the cost of an extension. The local authority must be satisfied that the works are both ‘necessary and appropriate’ for the needs of the disabled person, and ‘reasonable and practicable’ in relation to the property. Ask your GP or social care organisation for more information what you can and can't ask for.

Grants expert no the property isn't a council house its private rental and the landlords gave promission for all adaptions to be madd to give the children a better life.

So my local council Edinburgh council refuse to put a ramp or build a extension for my 2 disabled children which have both had major spinal surgery and there illness is hurlers sybdrom. CEC expect myself to fund the extension when they've advised the children need there rooms to be downstairs long term as they both find stairs extremely hard to get up and down i need to carry them both up and downstairs and also outside inthere wheelchairs aswell which CEC refuse to put a ramp in until I can fund the extension. Who can I turn to Social Work have advised they have no power to get involved in this fight.

Maybe if they've already paid for stairlifts in two other properties the council would prefer it if you were in a more suitable (i.e ground floor) property? And maybe because you've already had the grant twice, they consider it might be fairer to offer it to someone else? We really don't know that answer to this as we don't have enough information.

Hi,
An OT advised I get a stairlift (Rheumatoid Arthritis), she checked over our property which is a Council House. Months later I was told that a surveyor said the property could not be adapted (stair lift), now the council are trying to force us to move. I have been suspect this has been a ploy to force us into a smaller house, so I invited a Stannah representative in to give me a quote. Needless to say - he says there is no issues about installing a stairlift and it was a simple, straightforward job. (I have had to other stairlifts installed under the DFG by the council and never had a survey done - it has always been the OT and the stairlift installer making hte call. I have been now asked the question, if I can stay in my present home and pay for stairlift myself (it will have to be 2nd hand)? I don't understand then why I still can't apply for a DFG? Is the only way to apply is through the Council? I don't work and am on benefits. I appear to be caught in the midst of a Council power struggle.

Hi our eldest son has ADHD and on waiting list for Autism assessment. We desperately need to have separate bedrooms for our 2 boys as our eldest has aggressive outbursts, doesn't like his belongings touched and has difficult behaviours. We would like to convert our loft in to a basic bedroom. We live in a two bedroomed shared ownership property. Can we apply for any grants or assistance to convert loft? Eldest son recieves DLA. Thanks any help and advice welcomed.

Hi, i have a son with moderate to severe autism with same level learning difficulties. He has to be monitored when in the bathroom, as he's always turning taps on sliding up and down bath etc & floods bathroom. He has now been diagnosed with epilepsy. So he is safe at bathtime and to give him some independence would we be able to apply for a wet room ? He is 14. Many thanks

We cannot tell you what the cost of putting a driveway into your property would be as we don't know your details and we're not qualified to do so. You should ask an expert (e.g a surveyor, builder or engineer) for a quote if you think the council has overestimated. The actual amount of Disabled Facilities Grant you might get depends on both of your incomes and savings.

Hi my wife has just been told we have to pay nearly 4000 pounds towards having a drive put in to our council house because at the moment we have to park in a communal carpark about 350 yards away and her occupational therapist said she should get it done
I work full time but do not earn good money and we have no savings but the council will not tell her what percentage of the overall cost we are paying and what size grant we are entitled to we are not against paying but it is a large amount and we would like to know
When my wife asked the council she was told you don't need to know that
Is this correct and can we appeal the amount as it seems very high

Speak to your local council about the options for a dropped kerb. The disabled facilities grant may cover it but your council as the landlord would have to apply for it.

Hi I was wonderingifI could get any help with a drops idea curb and drive done im a cardiffcouncil tenant and they are too expensiveI'm on disabilityand pip I have severe fibromyalgia and inconvenience problems withe nerve damage a drive would help alot as the road side parking is too hard and busy

old I own my house bought from the Council in the 70s. It's a 2 bedroom terrace I have been told the whole house needs rewiring the bulbs keeps blowing out as well the wiring is original would there be
a Grant to help with this.

I have been left with severe nerve damage in my left leg and dropfoot after a major operation for cancer.my occupational therapist applied to my local council as im a tennant for a wetroom for my home but they point blank refused and she just said well thats that the but they are happy to pay for carers to come out every morning to help me in and out of the bath.although im very grateful for these carers helping me im only a 44 year old woman an very much value my independence which i have lost quite a lot of since my illness an i just believe giving me the ability to shower myself would be so much more beneficial.is there anyone i can turn to for help about this please.

It might be worth trying the Disabled Living Facilities Grant or you could also look at the Home repair assistance grant which is available if there is "an imminent and significant risk to the occupier as a consequence of the condition of the dwelling". Ask at your local council too, they often have details of local charities and grants schemes which might be relevant. The Citizen's Advice Bureau might be able to offer advice on how to take action to make the builder complete the work.

I live in a fixed mobile home its residental and I own it and the land its on
due todepressionealth uncontroled diabetes .. nerve damage .acute angina .and axiaty and depression all linked to my health problems I decided to have an extension built for a shower
Room and my own bedroom the builder started It built the foundation and wood joists then left im now left with a extension which is unsafe and could fall down ..but as i own it i cant get finical help even tho iam disabled now im left with a cold and damp extenstion into my home which i share with my wife and 2 young children .iam at a loss now no idea what and how i can get my home habitable again any advice or help about what I can do would be grateful

I am an owner occupier, widowed senior citizen on low income. I inherited my parents house six years ago and have now discovered a damp problem. I have been told that the DPC has failed. There is damp above the skirting on internal walls and I believe it is also coming up through the solid floor as the carpets are smelling musty and damp. I have a lung problem being treated at hospital and I believe the damp is making it worse. I do not have the funds to have this job done and I don't know what I'm going to do. Are there any grants available that could help me?
