Gardens for Children Grants

Why Gardens Matter for Children

Gardening gives children the chance to dig, plant seeds, watch insects and move around freely. These activities encourage physical activity and can support mental wellbeing.

For schools, nurseries and community groups, a garden lets children spend time outdoors as part of their normal routine rather than on an occasional trip. It also teaches them where food comes from, how plants grow and how to look after a shared space.

Not every child has a garden at home. Community gardens can give families a shared outdoor space to play, grow food and meet others.

Seeds, tools, raised beds, fencing, water butts, paths and upkeep all cost money. The routes below generally support organisations such as schools, nurseries, charities and community groups. They do not fund parents looking for money for a private family garden. Schemes open and close, so check each funder's website for current criteria, deadlines and award amounts.

Support for School and Nursery Gardens

Some schemes provide only equipment or materials, while others can fund project delivery and running costs. Check which costs each funder allows.

  • The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) offers teaching resources, planning guides and advice on school gardening. This is practical support, not a cash grant. Check the RHS website for current registration arrangements and any awards.
  • The Woodland Trust offers free tree packs to schools and community groups. These are trees rather than cash, and applicants need suitable planting space and must meet the scheme's requirements.
  • Tesco's Stronger Starts scheme focuses on projects that benefit children and young people. Other supermarkets run community schemes with different priorities and selection methods, so check whether schools can apply directly and which costs are covered.
  • Local businesses, garden centres and builders' merchants may donate tools, compost or timber.
  • Parent teacher associations can raise money for specific items such as raised beds or a polytunnel.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Funding and Support for Community Groups

Community groups and charities can apply to a range of funds, although eligibility depends on their legal structure and the activities proposed.

Potential grant funders include:

  • The National Lottery Community Fund, whose Awards for All small grants run as separate programmes for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, each with its own terms
  • The Postcode Trusts, which distribute funding raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery; find the trust covering your area, as priorities and application windows differ
  • Your local council, which may offer community grants, ward budgets or help with using council land
  • Local community foundations, which manage grants from a range of donors for projects in their area

For advice and practical support, Social Farms & Gardens offers training and information on funding for community growing. Groundwork helps communities improve green spaces and sometimes administers local grant programmes for other funders.

Some funders only accept applications from registered charities or constituted groups. An informal group may need a constitution, a group bank account and an agreed management structure. Being constituted does not mean you must register as a charity. If you intend to, check the relevant regulator: the Charity Commission for England and Wales, OSCR in Scotland or the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.

Preparing a Strong Application

Explain who will use the garden, what activities will take place and how you will measure the benefits. Before you apply, it helps to have:

  • A project description shaped by consultation with children, families and staff
  • A realistic budget with quotes for the main items
  • A lease, licence or written permission covering the site for the life of the project
  • Any planning or other consents needed for polytunnels, sheds, fencing or larger works, since landowner permission may not cover everything
  • Arrangements for supervision, risk assessment and safeguarding; whether volunteers need DBS checks, or the Scottish or Northern Irish equivalents, depends on their role
  • Accessible paths and raised beds that children with disabilities or additional needs can use
  • A plan for insurance, water access, tool storage, replacement costs and care during school holidays

Read the guidance notes carefully. Many funders will not pay for items already bought or work already started, and some cap the amount you can request. Expect to report on progress and keep receipts, and get the right permissions before sharing photographs of children.

Funders want to know the garden will continue after the grant ends. Volunteer commitments and letters of support from local partners help show this.

If an application is turned down, ask for feedback. The round may simply have been oversubscribed. You can try again if the funder's rules allow, or approach a different funder with a revised bid.

Many projects combine several smaller grants and donations. Declare other funding where asked, never claim the same cost twice, and note that some schemes require the whole project to be funded before work starts.

@Lainey Have a look at the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, which offers free starter packs once you register your school. The Wildlife Trusts and Grow Wild (part of Kew) also give out free wildflower seed kits to community groups each year, so worth keeping an eye on their application windows. For bulbs, try emailing local garden centres and B&Q community schemes, as many donate end of season stock. Tesco's Stronger Starts grant is another easy one to apply for.

HI We have just started a Gardening Club within our school, which involves both children and parents to join in and learn. We are at the very beginning and require would love some bulbs, wild flower seed and anything to help us on our way to making our school look prettier and letting our children learn and enjoy gardening, as some of them dont have one.

Hope you can consider this.
Much appreciated

Hello I hope that you can help me. I work in a school in Salford Manchester. We are running a gardening club for our young learners. Please tell me how we go about apply for a grant or some help in funding this. It would benefit our children so much. It may even extend to out local community and hug which soon to be open. We are a school of eager learners and the joy of gardens needs to be accessible to us all. It will teach the children and locals so much about the environment, nature, self surfactants, help with fine motor skills, gross motor skills including a physical activity, team work and hopefully build communities and friendships. Please help!

I am a Community outreach member of our primary school in the Enfield area
I would like to set up a gardening project for children in our primary school for children especially for those that do not have access to an out door space to grow plants.
We would love to create a wild flower garden to attract insects and a small vegetable patch to see how vegetables grow that we can then eat.

Hi, I work in an inner city school in Leeds where the majority of the children don’t have a garden. We are looking to create a school garden to create a wellbeing place the children can use to garden, play, explore. I was wondering if there is any funding we could have for developing such an essential space?
Thanks for your time.

Hi, I work in a primary school in Salford, Greater Manchester. I offer a Gardening Club to KS2 children after school one day a week. We have limited resources and space. The school is of Victorian build and has no green areas only concrete to all four sides of the building. We have three raised beds, unfortunately they are in an area that gets little sun. I would appreciate some advise on how it may be possible to apply for funding to help create a greener area around the school and grow some vegetables and plants so the children can learn about growing and how to maintain an garden or green space. Many of the children we educate live in flats or houses with only a back yard. It would be so beneficial to the children and staff to learn and work in a greener environment. Not only for there mental health and well-being.

Hi,
I have recently taken over as Head of School,
In a school which community serves in the top 1% for deprivation nationally across the country. I would like to create a school allotment and community garden. Teaching the children and families how to grow produce, supporting and encouraging all in having a more nutritious diet. Whilst educating from seed to table, as well as providing another food resource to the local food banks which so many of my families access.

For this a grant would be greatly appreciated to help me resource the project and get started, as present I have nothing, this is starting from scratch.

I look forward to hearing from you.

We are a infant school in Surrey and have been informed that we have a Safeguarding issue as the main school field is adjacent to a footpath and whilst the children are outside they could be spoken to by a passer by. We are looking at planting a hedge along the fence/boundary and would like to establish if a company would like to sponsor us towards the cost of purchasing hedging. We would promote this in our communication with parents and the wider community.
Thanking you in advance.

Hi, for my sins I am a scout leader/ quartermaster for a small rural group, we have been running a garden project for the past 13 year, we had to close down during covid as the site was closed by the local council.
When we re opens six months ago we had lost both sets of bees, and the flock of chickens had been relocated to another site, these where our main income for the site, along with a lot of wind damage we are have to re boot, my question is, is there any funding available to help us re build our project, we have the man/person power to do the job, just not the funding, as we did not have any income for fifteen months.

Hey I am an LSA at a school in South shileds. I am currently trying to set up eco schools as gardening the main aim. The garden we are setting up is a memorial garden for past staff and students who have passed away as well as a wellbeing garden for those working in it. Unfortunately the area we have has mares tail (think that's what it's called) basically a massive weed which has taken over the majority of the garden. We are trying to get pallets to build raised beds. As I am very new to this I was wondering is there any grants or funding I can apply for because at the moment I have some seeds I found in my home shed and some pepper plants I grew from the seeds of my food at home

I am taking over a Garden Club in a Primary school and am wondering how I would go about applying for a grant to enable me to continue the Club. Many of our children live in flats or terraced houses with small back yards and limited green spaces. We have very enthusiastic children eager to learn all about growing food and learning about where our food comes from. Any advice would be well appreciated.

Hi, I'm a HT at a high school in Moore House Academy in Bathgate for looked after and cared for vulnerable children and young people . We have a large garden and have successfully grown different vegetables which we have donated to local food banks and used for cookery lessons. The garden was extremely over grown, although even with the help of the students we still haven't been able to put the garden to it full , there is still a lot of work required. We were awarded first place in the" Keep Scotland Beautiful" Pocket garden competition which was amazing and has given the children a great sense of achievement. The children now want to get fully involved in all things out doors and share the benefits from growing food we can donate to the local community and develop an enterprise project so we are able to reinvest in our garden. The children gain so much from being outdoors especially after the pandemic and those who do not have a garden at home. Can you advise me if there are any grants available for us to help with our project or anywhere that would donate materials.
Kind regards
Alison Williams

Mrs Hicks 23/05/2021 at 9:35 pm
Good evening,
I don’t know if anyone can advise or help?
We started trying to grow a garden space in March when lock down was lifted. We thought about the children’s well being returning to school after lockdown and wanted a space and an interest that would enthuse them. So far this has been the case and we are doing this all in pots as it’s a small concrete space. We have done so well that the school is now going to give us a permanent space to create a “growing classroom” for the whole school.
Please if there is any help that we could have to make this space a special and forever one.

Hi , I work in a small Sen setting and a small group of children helped to make a unique sensory ,bug garden area , we stay with 4 boys who needed to develop social skills and communication , to say they excelled is a complete understatement ! The boys went from not enjoying school to talking and teaching peers on the importance of bug houses , fairy gardens , planting and a music area to enjoy ! These boys where year 3/4 when the started this journey of learning though nature ! I was overwhelmed by the support from staff who donated , pans , spoons , fairy’s , gloves and the basics we needed to get our club off the ground ! The school is a Sen primary and we had a few observers in as we had been working on our Asd accreditation award ! These four boys made a powerful power point for Johnny the man observing and he came and engaged with us and looked at our journey ! Now due to covid and staff isolation and covid and restrictions our happy sensory garden has been forgotten about , the boys our now year 6 children and I’ve been asked to start up this wonderful club again to allow our lovey children to enjoy the education of nature ! I start on the 17/05/21 and would just like to ask for any donations ! Spades , gloves , wellies , bits and bobs ! Thank you

Hello, we are looking to establish a school garden which enables easy disabled access for pupils in wheelchair. We want to ensure our disabled child feels part of the design and maintenance of the garden space throughout the school year and all that the seasons have to offer us.
We are a school in an area of deprivation and are limited in funds. We have already had some donations of planters to get us started. The biggest issue is accessibility through the garden space and a need for beds which are high off the ground.
Due to the current pandemic, there is an emphasis for all pupils to engage in quality outdoor learning and teaching activities and develop skills for learning, work and life. This request has never been more relevant or required to ensure our school is a truly inclusive environment.
We would love to develop family learning too and we see this garden project as having the potential to involve and engage parents/carers.
Can you please help us?

Hello I'm an Outdoor Learning Teaching Assistant at Barnham Broom Primary school. We would love to develop a gardening area with the children at our school. We aim to grow our own fruitveg and salad snacks and produce for cooking outdoors. We also want to create several habitats for amphibians, insects, mammals and birds in this area along with planting extra trees for our committment to environmental issues. The school grounds have little shade. We need at least £500 to start us on a sustainable path for the future.

I am headteacher of a small school in Cheshire. We have recently cleared and made safe, a small area at the back of school and would like to have some raised vegetable beds. We want to teach all children, but particularly the disadvantaged, to grow their own food and take it home or add to our salad bar for lunch. We have a disabled pupil in a wheelchair so we need the beds to be high enough to allow her to access the vegtables. We need around £400 for 3 raised planters.

Hi,

I am a primary school teacher in an inner London school. We have a completely bare concrete playground surrounding the school building, with only a small area that is meant to be a garden for the children. It is overgrown and abandoned, mainly used as a dumping for broken equipment with gates on it so the children can’t access it :( I am currently trying to find funding/volunteers to help me renovate it. The schools budget (thanks to the government cuts) has no spare money to allow us to do it ourselves. It’s such a shame that it is going to waste as the children would really benefit from a beautiful area. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Hi, I am working with family which is on a very low income. Their garden is small but full of uneven ground ( just earth) and when it rains it gets flooded. The lady is a single parent and has two little children. They cannot play outside as the house is near busy road and they cannot use the garden. Im looking for some kind person to sponsor the paving of this garden, so children can play outside.

I am chairman of Willowtown community primary school ptfa which is located in a small valleys town In South Wales which like many others have quite a degree of poverty in the area. We are currently campaigning and fundraising fiercely to raise funds for the school to help make a better future for all children, whatever their abilities and to also try to help with parent/children events that bring families together. Our school has become a community school as we also try to bring the community into the school by using facilities which will once again benefit the children but also others in the community. We have already achieved the purchase of a interactive immersion suite, helped finance I.T equipment, large playground climbing frames, helped with the arts room and many other projects big and small. We try to do our fundraising around having fun with the children,e.g discos, fun nights, film nights, adults only nights, sports days, prize bingo and many other events. We are now really keen to start on reorganising our outside areas especially our garden which again would greatly benefit the children and would hopefully encourage them to look after our environment and work with the land. We have already started trying to acquire items and ask for volunteers as we always try to get parents/carers involved but due to the amount of work needed and cost of materials, we need fencing, potting shed, soil, plants etc,we were hoping to maybe get help by applying for financial help. We would really like to get help to get the project up and running then we could keep fundraising to keep it maintained.

Hello I am the Co-Ordinator for a small local charity based in Dawlish and we offer a free Saturday morning drop in session for families who have children with special needs. We cater for the whole family and offer cooking, craft and play. We are based in a special needs school in Dawlish. There is a small garden where we planted a tree and a plaque in memory of our previous Co-Ordinator who lost her battle with cancer. We would love to involve our children in cultivating the garden and creating a sensory space for our children and children within the school. We are self funding and were wondering whether there were any small grants we could apply for to allow us to facilitate a sensory garden.
Thank you

We are a small school and have begun a partnership with a local Care home(charitable trust) to help transform a piece of land at the home into a sensory garden which is wheelchair accessible for residents. Our pupils are keen gardeners at school- polytunnel, beds, herbs planters etc etc! We are very exciting about designing and planting the care home garden and also maintaining it. Are there any grants available?
Many thanks

Can anyone advise me how/where I can apply for a grant to buy puddle suits and backpacks for 15/20 nursery age children. We have a Forrest Kindergarten project being developed and funding for these resources would a great help.

I am a development social worker working with rural poor farmers in Wakiso district in Uganda. We have a group of 260 farmers who need to be trained in organic agriculture to improve soil fertility which is the major problem that causes food shortages and persistent poverty in our communities. The group needs financial support to undertake the project so that farmers can improve on food security.
