Family Holiday Grants

Family Holiday Grants

What help is available for family holidays?

If your family is on a low income and has not had a break together for a long time, there are charities that may be able to help. These organisations fund UK holidays and short breaks for families facing difficult circumstances.

Eligibility typically requires both a financial and circumstantial element. You will usually need to be dealing with a disability, serious illness, caring responsibilities, bereavement, or domestic abuse alongside low income. Grants are usually paid directly to the accommodation provider rather than given as cash to your family.

Demand for these funds is high, and many operate in rounds or have geographic restrictions. Checking the official websites and applying early is important.

Charities that fund family breaks

The Family Holiday Charity is one of the main organisations offering holiday support. It funds UK breaks for families who have not had a holiday together for an extended period and are facing tough circumstances on top of low income. There is an important requirement: you cannot apply directly. A professional who works with your family, such as a social worker, health visitor, teacher, or support worker from a registered charity or statutory service, must submit the application on your behalf. Check the charity's website at familyholidaycharity.org.uk for full eligibility details and how the referral process works.

Family Fund supports families raising a disabled or seriously ill child or young person. It can help with a family break as well as other essentials like equipment and clothing. Families can apply directly without needing a professional referrer. Visit familyfund.org.uk to see the current criteria and how to apply.

Happy Days Children's Charity offers family day trips and holiday breaks for children with special educational needs, disabilities, life limiting illness, or those who have experienced abuse, neglect, bereavement, or are young carers. Both parents and professionals can submit applications. Their website at happydayscharity.org explains what is covered and who qualifies.

The 3H Foundation provides grants toward UK break accommodation for disabled people and their carers, as well as unpaid carers seeking respite. Eligibility changes depending on the funding round and geographic area, so you will need to check their current page at the3hfoundation.org.uk to see if your area is included. You can apply directly through their application form.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Other specialist support

Several other charities offer breaks for people in particular circumstances:

  • Revitalise provides respite holidays for disabled people and carers
  • Calvert Trust offers accessible outdoor activity holidays
  • Carefree arranges breaks for full time unpaid adult carers
  • The Honeypot Children's Charity provides respite for young carers
  • Break supports children in care, on the edge of care, or leaving care
  • Care for the Family runs holidays for single parent families
  • YHA offers bursary places for eligible young people

Each charity has its own eligibility rules and application process. Visit their websites directly to find out whether you or your family might qualify.

Finding grants and checking your benefits

If you are not sure where to start, Turn2us runs a free Grants Search tool to help you find charitable funds you might be eligible for. It does not provide holiday funding itself, but it can point you toward smaller local or specialist grants you might otherwise miss. Turn2us also has a Benefits Calculator to check whether you are claiming everything you are entitled to. Visit turn2us.org.uk to access both tools.

Before applying anywhere, make sure you are getting all the benefits your family is due. Extra income from benefits you have not claimed could make a break more affordable, even without a grant.

When you find a scheme that looks relevant, read the eligibility criteria carefully and apply as early as possible. Funding is limited and waiting lists can be long. Always check the specific application route for each charity, as some require professional referrals while others accept direct applications from families. If one charity cannot help, another might.

@Ty Sorry to hear things are so tough at the moment. Have a look at the Family Fund, as they specifically help families raising a disabled or seriously ill child and do grants towards breaks. Also worth contacting the Family Holiday Charity, who fund short UK breaks for families under financial and emotional strain, and your transplant unit may know of patient charities that help too. A referrer like a social worker, GP or health visitor usually needs to apply on your behalf.

Hello, my name is Helen. I have bipolar disorder, p t.s.d. I was robbed and held at knife point in my own home a few months ago, my car was stolen, since this has happened I can't sleep, I've lost weight, I barely go out the door, I have severe flashbacks, my bipolar is rife, I have felt suicidal many times, a short holiday or break would be so good for my mental health, going away somewhere i won't be judged or stared at, it woukd give me a chance to recuperate, relax and just feel safe and at ease. A holiday or short break would mean so much to me, all I ask is for someone to please consider me for a short break or holiday to regain my confidence. It would heal my p.t.s.d. in ways, I would be so grateful for the opportunity to have a break. Many many thanks x

Hi there.

I am a disabled single adult with 2 of my 3 beautiful children disabled.
1 : is on the SEND reg due to global developmental delay/2 years behind, is under the EP's - SALT are also involved - awaiting referal for pead's .
2: has Anger and behavioural issues due to Gender Identity Dysphoria.

I am looking for a cheap holiday/possible funding for my family & a friend for my daughter to come along - My eldest the non disabled one - needs some major respite from us 3! She needs to relax and enjoy life as on top of having her mother disabled, her father has long term cancer so she's dealing with alot along with being bullied for 4 years & self harming. She's doing great at present and I couldn't be more proud of who and what she's achieved so due to all that! I believe she needs some her time to do what she wants away from us!! Any help/advice is welcome.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi I am a single full time working mother on a low income. For the past 11 years I have been working in a school for children with SEBD and MH. A and have been in financial difficulties since my physically and emotionally abusive husband left me with a large amount of debt which almost resulted in me and my children loosing our home. Thankfully I managed to just about keep a roof over our head. Its been a constant struggle. I was being treated for depression before my ex left and I still take medication now. With a demanding job, low income and what feels like not a minute spare in the day its safe to say I on single parent burn out.
After my husband left I ended up in another abusive relationship that ended because of the domestic violent to me in front of my girls. I now suffer with anxiety and panic disorder. At this current time my mental heath has got worse and I cant seem to get help with this. Im so worried how this will effect my children. I wish I could do more for them, they ask when can we have a holiday and it breaks my heart knowing I cant take them away, finances just dont allow it. Finances dont even stretch to the basic of new clothes and haircuts. I also dont feel the get the quality time they should with me. I constantly feel overwhelmed with life in general. Its all very difficult, I get snappy and I hate myself for it. Wish I could stop n breath and spend relaxed quality time with them havin fun. I feel all I bring them is sadness and myself, when all ive tried to do is my best to bring them up alone. With no support network im lost alone in the dark, i dont like it as its scary here in my mind. Now Im scared how it feels for them and consumed with guild because mental health mummy is no good no matter how hard she tried

Im trying to get funding for when we move home to another council home. I anticipate a move before summer but I need funding. I would like to secure a holiday for my son and I this year. He was almost a victim of knife crime and set on in our neighborhood.antisocial thugs have made home life hell. I suffer depression and he can't focus on school most days. I need to disconnect before the end of the year with a simple holiday for him. Where can I get funding. A budget ing loan is already being paid back from last year so I can't borrow much more.

Hi I'm a single parent who suffers with PTSD. My ex walked out after I was attacked 2 years ago leaving me in £20,000 debt taking our business and car with him. I have a 4 year old who is desperate to get away on holiday and I'm currently in court against her dad because his family are violent and attack me if I dare to venture out of the house. I go to college but I'm finding it difficult as it's very rare I sleep with everything that's going on. I can barely afford court costs let alone debts and bills. We have no money at all is there any help I could receive to help get my special little child a holiday she deserves?
Tigger 15/02/2016 at 3:33 pm
Good afternoon.
I am emailing you in the hope you can help or guide me as to where I can organise a holiday for my friend Paula. She has been struck down with the incurable illness of elhos danlos syndrome. Paula is only 39yrs and a single mum to a 14year old girl and a 6year old boy. Paula was a hard working woman who worked tirelessly to enable her children to be happy and secure.
She still tries very hard but would love to have a family holiday away from the four walls she looks at daily as she does not get out of the house very often.
Regards
Debbie

@colin1811. Here are the links we posted for another person below many of them relate to disabled children, but you will find lots of useful help there: Here are the links to the organsations mentioned in the article The Calvert Trust, The 3H fund, The Family Holiday Association. Here are some more that may be useful for you:The Family Fund - helps families with disabled children and young people aged 17 and under to have choices and the opportunity to enjoy ordinary life. Harriet Davis Trust - The Trust provides four self-catering holiday houses in Pembrokeshire, UK for families with disabled children at economical prices Scout holiday home trust - holidays are available to families, carers or groups who have a member with a disability, physical or mental or age related illness and to low-income or single-parent families (no scouting connection is needed).

Hi My wife (age 38) has a life long illness called wilsons disease, her liver and brain is affected she attends hospital every other week near enough she is suffering with severe depression and has short term memory problems.
She has been in hospital twice in the past year and is now having to use a wheel chair as her mobility is getting so bad.
She receives higher rate dla ( but we have the mobility car instead) and has higher rate care.
I had to pack in work over a year ago to care for her and i receive income support and carers allowance, we have child tax credit and child benefit.we have very little income and struggle.
We have 3 boys all in full time education 17, 14, 10 at home and a daughter that is 19 with a baby age 2 that lives near us to help care for my wife.
We cannot afford a holiday and she needs a break badly and so does my family..., is there any help/info we can get towards funding for a holiday? thanks

Do you have a list of charities that give holiday grants to individuals suffering with serious learning disabilities and who are on income support? It is becoming increasingly harder to find chairites who will consider applications from individuals who do not have a social worker .
